What Rugged means to Toyota
Diff lock
Fox suspension
Skid plates
What rugged means to Honda ( 2019 passport if you are confused)
Sloped rear glass
Standard 20 inch wheels
Under floor cubbies
This live stream of the passport is depressing even with lowered expectations.
The fact that a called out feature in the press release was an actual volume knob and that it was referred to as “retro” tells me all I need to know.
Looks, it’s going to be a good vehicle for the 5 passenger crossover segment but you shot yourselves in both feet making a big stink about it being a rugged adventure machine. and listing your competitors as the 4Runner and Grand Cherokee
As a video editor I cringe to think that someone had to make the best of this creative brief for this video.
“we have a new vehicle that will be rugged and adventurous! and we want to have something high action that shows it off.”
“cool, so are we thinking rubicon or moab? or...”
“oh no its a rugged adventure lifestyle segment vehicle, nothing like that.”
“oh okay so like camping and beach driving and stuff.”
“no more macho than that, and high energy!”
“oh I hear you of course! We’ll make it great!” *dies inside*

are you kidding me, a VOLUME KNOW is now ‘retro”?
oh my fucking god honda
![]() 11/27/2018 at 19:11 |

exactly. Honda needs an intervention

No auto executive ever has actually tried driving off-road with 20 inch rims. If there were, they'd have chucked it.

Honda should’ve just taken the MU-X and slapped a Passport badge on it. Prove me wrong.

Honda is good at what it’s supposed to be good at. I have a pilot and love it (lack of volume knob aside), and a Civic and it’s perfectly fine for a commuter that can push 30 mpg. No intervention necessary.
This here is not what Honda is good at, never really was. Passport was a rebadged Isuzu, nothing more. No expectations should have existed.

Under the Toyota list, you missed "ugly fucking front clip", but other than that spot on.

Standard 20" wheels only means the occupants need to be rugged, even on road.

Our Odyssey’s volume knob is retro in that it’s about as reliable as a 1950 solid state. Actually less so.
(Dust accumulates behind it and causes random full-volume runs until the car is fully restarted.)

The public is going to lap up the marketing. Expect them to sell a million of these. They have read the market perfectly. I wouldn’t be surprised if the AWD versions stoles sales away from the Forester or Outback.

Actually, this new Passport should impress people with it’s off-road capabilities, if you look at that people can and have done with one of it’s close relatives, the Ridgeline.
It’s pretty good, so I’d expect the same, if not better from the Passport.

I believe its a highlander competitor, not a 4runner competitor. N o matter what anyone at honda or anywhere else tells you.

I think they on to something, this car is for those who want that “rugged” look, just like the guys who own those jeeps and the 4runner at the end of the days their just grocery getters.

Wow that is the fugliest rear of ANY CUV in a long time.
Literally a mish mash of the CR-V and Pilot, then pushed all the way in like a pug’s face. We should have gotten the Avancier. It’s big, it’s ugly, it’s bold, and it’s brash; i.e. e xactly what Honda needs, not some literal cardboard box on wheels.

Ridgeline is to off-road as twinky is to budget eclair. kinda yes, mostly no.

I think comparing it to the Grand Cherokee is fair, those never go off road

See 21:15 for the thought process.
This is a slightly larger alternative to a Subaru Crosstrek. Generally slow and boring, but handles a rough-ish dirt road just fine and much better than a Civic. Not gonna handle anything nearly as rough as a Wrangler or Jeep Trailhawk or TRD Toyota will, but also doesn’t look like it. It also will ride and drive a bazillion times better on the road, while using less fuel .
Look at the current Honda lineup and who the target buyer is . No body is trading their brodozer in for a Ridgeline, just as nobody will be trading in their Wrangler for a Passport. There will be tons of people trading in their Civics and Accords for a Passport, however, and that’s exactly the market Honda is going after here.

They call it the P assport but the only border it would ever cross is the Canadian one.

The pilot is giving the Highlander problems, I believe. At least judging by how many I see on the road. Will you or me buy this over a 4 runner? No, that's ridiculous. But to 85% of 4 runner buyers, it'll do just fine.
![]() 11/27/2018 at 21:03 |

They could have... except Mazda has already cosied up to Isuzu for that. Or at least the next iteration of it. So no dice.
![]() 11/27/2018 at 21:23 |
|
yeah... but that’s the market. 90% of 4runners might be driven on a gravel road a few times, maybe in the snow to go skiing but that’s about it.

Forester and outback for sure. those are is next closest peers

It works great for 5-7 minutes until the the shit starts overheating and you are literally one tire firing at 1800 RPMs because all the computers are cutting power to everything to prevent damage.

The fucked up thing is I would be all over a Honda-engineered 4Runner. I think everyone would be, actually. But this is as lame as the new B lazer.

It’s not designed for the Rubicon trail or Moab, but it will probably get you anywhere else you’d want to go. Think of it as a reliable alternative to a Subaru Forester or Outback, while also being slightly more masculine. More macho than a CRV, and not minivanish looking like the Pilot. I’d have it over a Cherokee Trailhawk.
Think of it as a last stop before you settle into a full economical or practical dad mobile. It says I may have a fiance, but she still lets me go hiking and kayaking on weekends because we don’t have kids yet. It says, I own a fitbit, but not guns. One last hoorah before your weekends consist of Costco runs in the Odyssey, and toddler birthday parties. Your days of stopping at REI on the way home “ just to look” are numbered.

That was his way of saying “ok we heard you, you crybabies. We tried to make our interiors modern and sleek, but if you insist on having an old analog knob fine...here it is. But you can forget about ever getting a traditional gear shift again . We’re standng our ground on that one ”.
